Sarcoptic mange spreads through direct contact and causes severe itching, crusting on ear margins and elbows, and secondary bacterial infections. Demodectic mange often appears as patchy hair loss with milder itching, common in puppies.

A TelaVets veterinarian can evaluate lesion distribution on video, distinguish mange from allergies or ringworm, and prescribe effective systemic or topical treatments — often the same day.

Common signs of dog mange we can help with

  • Intense scratching and biting at skin
  • Patchy hair loss
  • Red, crusty skin lesions
  • Thickened or darkened skin over time
  • Ear margin crusting (common in sarcoptic mange)
  • Secondary bacterial skin infection odor
  • Restlessness and sleep disruption from itching
  • Lesions on elbows, hocks, chest, or face

What causes dog mange?

Identifying sarcoptic vs. demodectic mange is essential — treatment protocols and contagion risks differ significantly.

Sarcoptes scabiei mites

Burrow into skin and cause extreme itching. Highly contagious between dogs and can cause temporary itching in people.

Demodex canis overgrowth

Normally harmless mites proliferate in puppies or immunosuppressed dogs, causing localized or generalized demodicosis.

Immune suppression

Cushing's disease, hypothyroidism, chemotherapy, or chronic steroid use weaken skin defenses and allow mite populations to explode.

How our vets diagnose it online

Skin scrapes under a microscope confirm mites, but clinical signs and history often allow our vets to start presumptive treatment while testing is arranged.

  • Visual assessment of lesion pattern and distribution on video
  • History of contact with stray dogs, wildlife, or boarding facilities
  • Evaluation of itch severity and secondary infection signs
  • Discussion of skin scrape results if already performed at a clinic
  • Guidance on treating in-contact pets for sarcoptic mange

Treatments we may prescribe

Modern isoxazolines have revolutionized mange treatment. Our vets select the safest protocol for your dog's breed, age, and mange type.

  • Isoxazoline parasiticides (e.g., fluralaner or sarolaner)

  • Ivermectin or milbemycin for demodectic mange (breed-dependent)

  • Lime sulfur dips for sarcoptic mange

  • Antibiotics for secondary pyoderma

  • Medicated shampoos to reduce crusting

  • Immune workup for generalized demodicosis in adult dogs

  • Environmental decontamination of bedding for sarcoptic mange

All medications are prescribed only when clinically appropriate by a licensed veterinarian and dispensed through our FDA-compliant pharmacy.

Preventing dog mange

  • Avoid contact with stray or visibly mangy dogs

  • Treat all in-contact dogs when sarcoptic mange is diagnosed

  • Wash bedding and collars in hot water during treatment

  • Support immune health with balanced nutrition and parasite prevention

  • Address underlying endocrine disease that predisposes to demodicosis
