Poultry lice are common in backyard flocks, especially during warmer months. They feed on feather debris and skin secretions, causing intense irritation that leads to feather loss, reduced egg production, and behavioral changes. Heavy infestations can weaken birds and make them susceptible to secondary infections.

TelaVets avian veterinarians can help you confirm a lice diagnosis on video, differentiate lice from mites or feather pecking, and create a practical flock treatment plan — including product selection, application technique, and follow-up timing to eliminate the infestation.

Common signs of chicken lice we can help with

  • Excessive scratching and preening
  • Feather loss, especially around vent and under wings
  • Restlessness and irritability
  • Pale egg yolks in laying hens
  • Visible white or tan insects at feather base
  • Clumped or damaged feathers
  • Reduced egg production
  • Weight loss in heavy infestations

What causes chicken lice?

Lice outbreaks spread through close contact — identifying how they entered your flock is key to preventing reinfestation after treatment.

Direct flock contact

Lice spread through bird-to-bird contact within a flock. A single infested bird can transmit lice to the entire flock within days through roosting and dust bathing together.

Introduction of infected birds

New chickens brought into a flock without quarantine are the most common source of lice outbreaks. Lice eggs (nits) on feathers can hatch weeks after introduction.

Overcrowding and stress

Dense flock populations and stressed birds with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to lice proliferation and harder-to-control infestations.

How our vets diagnose it online

Lice are often visible to the naked eye at the base of feathers — our vets guide you through a video examination to confirm the diagnosis and assess severity.

  • Video examination of feather shafts and skin for visible lice and egg clusters (nits)
  • Differentiation from mites, feather pecking, and molting
  • Assessment of flock-wide versus individual bird infestation levels
  • Review of recent bird introductions and quarantine practices
  • Evaluation of coop density and stress factors contributing to spread

Treatments we may prescribe

Because lice live on the bird, treatment focuses on the flock itself — our vets recommend products and schedules that match your birds' age, breed, and egg-laying status.

  • Permethrin dust or spray application to affected birds

  • Ivermectin treatment with appropriate egg withdrawal guidance

  • Diatomaceous earth dusting in coop and dust bath areas

  • Repeat treatment at 7–10 day intervals to kill newly hatched lice

  • Coop cleaning to remove fallen feathers carrying nits

  • Nutritional support for birds with feather damage

  • Flock-wide treatment even if only some birds show symptoms

All medications are prescribed only when clinically appropriate by a licensed veterinarian and dispensed through our FDA-compliant pharmacy.

Keeping poultry lice out of your flock

  • Quarantine all new birds for 30 days and inspect feathers for lice before flock introduction.

  • Provide ample dust bathing areas with fine sand or diatomaceous earth — regular dust bathing is a natural lice deterrent.

  • Inspect birds monthly by parting feathers at the vent and under wings, especially during warm weather.

  • Avoid overcrowding — provide at least 4 square feet per bird inside the coop.

  • Treat the entire flock simultaneously whenever lice are found — treating only visible birds allows rapid reinfestation.
